WORK INCLUDES

Construction Laborers are in charge of staging an area prior to and throughout the construction process for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. They perform a wide variety of tasks to help coordinate and facilitate construction ranging from the very basic to the complicated and genuinely hazardous. Requires situational awareness, spatial relations, physical strength, computational reasoning, improvisational problem solving, mechanical intuition, ability to read blueprints, and communication skills.

Laborers have numerous specialties including the following areas (and more):

  • Asphalt shoveling Concrete work
  • Bridge maintenance Demolition
  • Building attendant Flagperson/traffic control
  • Caulker Welder/torch person
  • Delivery worker Mason Tender
  • Equipment worker Clean-up (all types)
  • Jack hammer operator Carpenter tender
  • Lansing burner
  • Signal man
  • Pipe setter

EDUCATION

To join an apprenticeship program you must be 18 years old, and be employed with a signatory contractor and be physically able to do the work.

Apprenticeship is a 3 year minimum program in which students are paid to receive on-the-job practical training and unpaid conventional classroom instruction.

On-the-job training is completed by the Apprentice working full-time with a contractor, and Related Training is completed at training facilities. There is no charge for tuition.

Who is SEMNBCT?

The Southeastern Minnesota Building and Construction Trades Council (SEMNBCT) is comprised of local trade unions, and includes union representatives from the entire building and construction industry.

SEMNBCT exists to provide leadership to union members, promote and support the development of advanced knowledge by skilled workers, and offers guidance and support to owners and signatory contractors.
