WORK INCLUDES

Workers in the Painters & Allied Trades are those responsible for aesthetic and functional finishes or materials applied to architecture, machinery, and more. With a wide variety of specialties, workers use hand and power tool for installation and utilize computers for layout, material tracking and site management. Requires manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, computational reasoning, color/artistic aptitude, and physical fitness.

Painters & Allied Trades includes the following specialties (and more):

Painter-Decorator apply decorative and protective finishes in residential, commercial, institutional and industrial settings such as paint, high performance coatings, waterproofing, fireproofing, varnish, shellac, wall coverings and special decorative finishes.

Drywall Finishers (or tapers) prepare unfinished interior drywall panels for painting by taping and finishing joints and imperfections.

Glaziers are Architectural Glass and Metal technicians who are responsible for selecting, cutting, installing, replacing, and removing all types of glass.

Sign & Display craftspeople design, fabricate, construct, paint and install interior and exterior signage of all types.

Trade Show Workers move and handle freight, rig equipment, and set up and dismantle exhibits and modular systems.

EDUCATION

To join an apprenticeship program, you must be 18 years of age, achieved a high school diploma or GED, and maintain the physical ability to do the work.

Apprenticeships programs generally last a minimum of three to four years and pay wages that are a certain percentage of journey level compensation.

The Finishing Trades Institute of the Upper Midwest serves current and potential workers in the finishing trades industry throughout Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Western Wisconsin.

Who is SEMNBCT?

The Southeastern Minnesota Building and Construction Trades Council (SEMNBCT) is comprised of local trade unions, and includes union representatives from the entire building and construction industry.

SEMNBCT exists to provide leadership to union members, promote and support the development of advanced knowledge by skilled workers, and offers guidance and support to owners and signatory contractors.
