WORK INCLUDES

Operating Engineers are responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment involved in the construction, maintenance, and demolition of public, private, and residential buildings & infrastructure. Stationary Engineers stay behind after construction is completed to operate and maintain finished structures. Requires situational awareness, spatial relations, improvisational problem solving, mechanical intuition, and communication skills.

Operating Engineers operate the following pieces of heavy equipment (and more):

  • Tower cranes
  • Dozers
  • Loaders
  • Asphalt pavers
  • Motor graders

EDUCATION

To join an apprenticeship program you must be 18 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license, achieved a high school diploma or GED, and the physical ability to do the work.

Apprenticeships programs usually last a minimum of three to four years and pay wages that are a certain percentage of journey level compensation.

The Local 49 training center is located in Hinckley, MN and offers a comprehensive educational program.

Who is SEMNBCT?

The Southeastern Minnesota Building and Construction Trades Council (SEMNBCT) is comprised of local trade unions, and includes union representatives from the entire building and construction industry.

SEMNBCT exists to provide leadership to union members, promote and support the development of advanced knowledge by skilled workers, and offers guidance and support to owners and signatory contractors.
